Our information role

The provision of information aimed at increasing awareness of consumer issues is a core activity of the National Consumer Agency (NCA).

Consumers rely on good information to make informed choices. Information empowers consumers and encourages them to seek quality services and products. Having a good understanding of consumer rights enables the individual to evaluate product and service offerings from an informed position.

To meet the demands of these consumers, businesses require clear guidance on their statutory obligations and on how to offer value and appropriate service.

The information services currently provided by the NCA include:

  • A consumer website: www.ConsumerConnect.ie, providing consumers with a range of information in relation to basic rights, updates on topical consumer issues and a channel to communicate with the NCA on issues of importance to them
  • itsyourmoney.ie, a site providing price comparisons, guides and tools for consumer financial products and services
  • A corporate website: www.nca.ie, providing those who supply products and services to consumers with information in relation to their obligations under consumer law and updates on topical consumer issues. This also offers access to the register of NCA-approved credit intermediaries and current media updates on consumer matters
  • Specific information campaigns on television, radio and across other media
  • Consultation processes on relevant consumer topics
  • A consumer helpline on a national lo-call number 1890 432 432
  • Publication of a Shoppers' Rights Card, available from participating retailers

The Agency is currently finalising plans to roll out a range of further information-based activities, to include liaison activities with businesses, representative bodies, Consumer Information Centres, participation at relevant exhibitions and trade fairs, and market research projects.
